The Inertia

I became obsessed with Mason Ho’s excitable attitude and good vibes the first time I met him a few years ago. We were at Bells at the time and I couldn’t help but notice how infectious his vibes were for everybody around us. He’s one of my favorite humans, to put it simply.

I had a chance to chat with him recently and wanted to pick his brain about what he’s up to lately as he cruises around Hawaii. Here are some highlights from that chat.

Mason, it’s so good to hear from you! How’s life treating you?

Yeahhhhh Nate Doggy, thanks for hitting me up! Life’s been treating me really good. My family is healthy and I get to surf every day with friends.

What have you been up to lately?

I been surfing and skateboarding a lot.

What’s it like growing up in Hawaii with so many inspirational people around you?

It’s the coolest feeling in the world because there’s always a good chance I’ll bump into one of my heroes once I leave the house.

You are awesome, man. How do you become such a fun loving human?

I just follow a happy feeling I have deep down and mainly stay away from anything negative that can cause harm to me or my family.

If there is any woman on this planet you could go on a date with, who is it?

I’d like to date a full blood Hawaiian girl but they’re hard to find nowadays.

What’s your favorite part of being a professional surfer?

My favorite part is waking up in the morning. First thing I think of is, where are the funnest waves today? Such a lucky job.

When I was in Hawaii I tried a Chocolate Haupia Cream cake at Sunset. Surely that’s your favorite food…

Haha, that use to be until I ate it too much when I was younger. Now I can’t eat that one. I like the Pumpkin Haupia Creampie nowadays. Or a spam musubi.

If you could have a secret power what would it be?

Hold my breath forever.

Lastly, is there any advice you would give kids to control their pre-heat nerves?

Since surfing is all about fun and heats are all about beating your opponent, I like to mix the two. I think about how fun it will be to beat my opponent or even have a chance to surf against them.
