The Inertia

A man in his 40s was reportedly helped from the water at Melbourne’s URBNSURF after suffering what officials called a “medical emergency.” He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. Friday in Australia.

“Our thoughts are with the surfer, their family, and friends,” reads a statement on the company’s website. “Our team has provided support and care for the guest and their friends on site. Our first priority is the health and safety of our customers. Out of an abundance of care and respect for all involved, the facility will remained closed until further notice.”

Details were scant, and there was no further information given by the park on the man’s condition on the website. Australia’s 7News reported two details about the accident: first that the man was treated after “suffering a cardiac arrest and collapsing.” The news outlet also reported that, “It’s believed the man was treated for a head injury before being taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.”

In the same piece, URBNSURF is quoted as saying that footage showed “the surfer collapsed while paddling out and did not hit the wall.”

URBNSURF is apparently working with authorities looking into the incident. We will work to unravel this information as we find out more.
