The Inertia

For a contest with such huge waves, the Big Wave World Tour barely made a ripple in its inaugural year under WSL ownership.

But it’s not for lack of talent, or waves. More than likely, it’s the WSL’s focus on the regular tour–and as exciting as the best surfers in the world can be, it’s pretty damn hard to top forty-foot faces and the ensuing destruction.

Makua Rothman is one of the most exciting surfers to watch on the BWWT. As a rookie, he recently took home the prize for being the biggest and baddest of men that surf those ridiculously huge waves. The funny thing is that he donned the crown after only competing in two events: Peru and Spain.

But although Rothman’s win might not get the attention it deserves, and although he won it with only two events, and although the BWWT seems to be struggling under WSL ownership, Makua is one of the greatest big wave surfers in the world. If things shape up in the coming years, Rothman’s name will undoubtedly be among the best of the best–just like it is now, but people will know… as they should. Want proof? See below.
