A skimboard isn’t generally thought of as something to ride XXL waves on. Sure, there are a few outliers who’ll give it a go — Brad Domke comes to mind — but for the most part, you’re not going to find skimboards in big wave lineups like Nazaré. Unless you’re in the lineup at Nazaré with Lucas Fink.
Fink, who hails from Brazil, got a skimboard for Christmas when he was just 7 years old. Three years later, after getting completely obsessed with it, he entered his first contest. Now, he’s a Brazilian Professional Champion, South American Champion, and World Champion. He also became the first non-American to win the United Skim Tour overall title in 2019, and he’s not slowing down.
Riding a wave with no fins is no easy task, even when the wave is a normal size. But Fink lives to do things that others might deem impossible, and when the Nazaré big wave season fired up, he waxed up his little disc of a board and got ready. The world’s most famous big wave has been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks, but Fink’s ride might just be one of the most eye-catching rides we’ve seen so far.
