Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca has made quite a name for himself in the big wave realm. He’s a Nazaré regular who knows the ins and outs of what it takes to keep things safe(ish) out there. When it’s big, Chumbo excels. And as such, he was the point of focus for Red Bull’s series, “My Last Two Winters.”
In it, Chumbo books a ticket from Nazaré to Maverick’s, then over to Teahupo’o and back to Praia do Norte. Once there, he grabs yet another trophy for his part in Team Young Bulls along with Kai Lenny in the WSL’s Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge.
Chumbo doesn’t care all that much about the accolades, though. He’d be doing it if no one was watching. The video above is a testament to that. “For a surfer from Brazil to earn the respect that he has,” Red Bull wrote, “and travel and surf with the crew that he does – take a bow Kai Lenny and Ian Walsh – speaks volumes about the level to which Chumbo pushes himself, and the pure spirit with which he does it.”
