There’s a reason why the World Surf League decided to have its finals day at Lowers. Well, likely a few reasons, but the first, I hope, is that it’s a very, very good wave. The second, of course, is because Southern California equates to business or butts in the sand, etcetera. I do have an opinion about it (I’d rather see the end the year at Pipe, for God’s sake), but I’m not pulling the levers over there. But that first part still stands: Lowers is one of the best waves in California.
When it goes off, however, most of California appears to be in the water. Everyone’s real serious, too, except for a handful of people like Tyler Stanaland and Kalani Robb, and for the most part, the less serious ones are the ones who’re surfing the best. And not just because they’re the ones having the most fun.
