The Inertia

The Surf Lakes R&D facility in Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia is back in action. It’s likely you remember when the Mad Max wave maker first released its dystopian steam-filled footage because it was unlike anything else anyone had ever seen. An enormous metal plunger dropping into the center of an enormous, round pool displaced water over a series of different bathymetries. It created waves, that’s for sure, but unlike the other wave pools, it created a bunch of different waves all over the pool. Then, as new inventions generally do, it broke. But now it’s fixed, and the waves are the things that are breaking now.

The testing took place over the last few weeks, and not only are the waves breaking, but they also look quite a bit bigger than the waves in the original footage. In all, Surf Lakes has eight different breaks so a four-wave set produces 32 surfable waves — all within a minute.

While most people were watching the more critical waves near the center of the lake, the beachies were going off, too. Luca Doble and good friend Charlotte Lethbridge were there to party wave and have what looks to be a very good time.
