The Wedge has certainly kicked out a few solid sessions this year, especially for those who know how to handle themselves in wicked shorepound. But that’s not always the kind of people that get in trouble at the Wedge. I have a soft spot in my heart for lifeguards. They do the good work every single day, even when they don’t want to. That’s why I was surprised when I came across this Wedge rescue video and hadn’t caught wind of it before.
The video, posted to the YouTube page SoCalVideos, shows lifeguards making a textbook rescue when the Wedge is thumping. You can actually see the current, and how strong it’s pulling out to sea after the waves detonate on the sand. These lifeguards didn’t even hesitate throwing themselves into the maw for a group of people that look like they might not know what they’re doing.
This has, of course, happened at the Wedge before. One of the most noteworthy was when a couple on a Jet Ski didn’t judge the surf correctly and yard saled all over the place, requiring help from lifeguards. These men and women are always on duty. Hats off to them, again.
