Familial pressures always feels the strongest. And for tour surfers Carissa Moore and Kolohe Andino, competitive life with pop around is no different. With the 2014 Hurley Pro at Trestles days away, Red Bull Surfing gives us a glimpse into the well-traveled lives of two surfers in their prime, and the roles their respective fathers play.
For Moore, the Hawaiian channels her prowess in the ocean from her father’s successful life as a waterman. While expectations for the two-time world champion are always high, it is her hereditary internal drive that has taken her to the winner’s circle time and time again. That and surfing “like a man,” according to coach Shane Beschen.
For Andino, the Southern Californian has overcome a long-documented struggle with expectations — his own as well as his father’s, along with the outspoken opinions of surf critics and fans — to have his most successful WCT season to date. Coincidentally or otherwise, this year also marks the first that Dino has taken a less-directly-involved approach to his son’s career.
Will two of the most decorated groms from the National Scholastic Surfing Association championships realize their full potential in the big times?
