According to Associated Press reports, Lee Kent Harrington, the 56-year-old executive director of the Southern California Leadership Council, died while surfing St. Augustine Beach near his home at Hollister Ranch on February 4th, 2011.
Harrington was found unconscious by his friends, who had spent the day surfing with him. According to reports, his friends unsuccessfully attempted to revive him via CPR. After a helicopter arrived at the scene, further attempts to resuscitate Harrington were unsuccessful.
According to his friends, Harrington was a proficient surfer and was enjoying himself amid the six-foot surf. Initial investigations revealed no signs of trauma or foul play. Harrington’s is the third recorded death at Hollister Ranch and second instance of a surfer dying while surfing in Southern California in three weeks.
