The Inertia

The Canary Islands are pretty magical. Known as the Sunshine Center of Europe, the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean is comprised of he Spanish provincias of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Ferro, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and Lanzarote. Tim Bonython’s latest YouTube offering comes from the last place on that list.

This my third visit to this magical island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands,” wrote Bonython, who may well be the most-travelled filmmaker in surfing. “It’s a wind blown, arid volcanic landscape with some fabulous local surfers surfing some very shallow reefs that at times can be very big.”

It’s not an easy place to surf, depending on the wave you choose, but for those willing to surf big barrels over shallow reef, there’s a serious pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In the film above, local surfer Laura Coviella is heavily featured.

While many of the island have incredible surf, Lanzarote stands out. El Quemao beach could be considered one of the world’s best surfing spots, but it’s a little farther off the radar than place like Indonesia or Hawaii. But when a solid swell hits, the waves there can rival the best on Earth. Take, for example, this beautiful slab at La Santa on Lanzarote Island.
