Landon McNamara, the most recent winner of The Eddie, turned himself into police over an outstanding warrant from a year ago. As of this writing, he is out on bail.
According to Island News, McNamara was having a tough time in December of 2023, and has since been working very hard on himself. His win at the most prestigious big wave event in the world is proof that he’s doing something right.
“Landon McNamara is charged with a matter that took place over a year ago,” McNamara’s attorney said to Island News. “It was a matter that allegedly occurred contemporaneously with a misdemeanor matter of which he pled no contest to and was granted a Deferred Acceptance. Both these matters were related to personal issues and challenges that Mr. McNamara was experiencing during December of last year (2023). Mr. McNamara took immediate steps to overcome these challenges and for this reason, the District Court Judge in the former matter found him to be a qualified and deserving candidate for a deferral. Mr. McNamara has been free of any arrests over this past year and continues to overcome the challenges that once plagued him.”
According to court records, McNamara was originally picked up on December 22, 2023 for a “mental health observation.” Island News wrote that the police were called after Landon broke a window. When they arrived, he was placed in the police cruiser, where he allegedly “kicked and damaged the vehicle’s door and plexiglass partition.” It’s also alleged that when he was placed in a holding cell, he broke a window there, as well.
He has pleaded no contest to breaking the cell window and the charges for the initial broken window were dismissed. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 30. It appears that, by turning himself in, Landon is continuing on his path to self-improvement and dealing with his past.
