I am a Laird fan through and through. I like that he’s polarizing. I like that people try to cut chinks in his armor while he marches onward in a direction he believes in. I like that he doesn’t care. Or doesn’t let it show. Even though we’ve discussed haters with him once before. So I was excited to check out his new film Take Every Wave at its red carpet premiere in Hollywood last week. The film is directed by Rory Kennedy (yes, of that Kennedy family). She’s also been nominated for an Academy Award for some outstanding humanitarian documentaries (gotta go big when you make a film about yourself!), and she makes an earnest attempt at telling his story, warts and all. A full review of the film is to come, don’t you worry. In the meantime, we had a good time chatting with the diverse celebrity entourage that flanks a man of Laird’s stature. Martin Sheen, Chelsea Handler, Sean Penn, and Daniel Tosh were all in attendance. And in continuing our quest for the perfect shaka, we got some advice from Laird, Gabby, Minnie Driver, Gary Linden, Rory Kennedy, and Nic Lamb as to how to toss that shaka out when the time is right. And as Laird might say, “The time is right.”
Shot and edited by Aika Lau.
Take Every Wave is now playing in select theaters and available on demand.
