The Inertia

“That will most likely be an expensive bird.”Ross Williams

Kolohe’s frustrated. He’s had a rough year on tour, placing 13th in more contests than not. He’s been trudging through the WQS, just to ensure his spot on next year’s tour. His sights were set on his homebreak of Lowers for a strong showing. But then he matched up against Mick Fanning in a round three heat.

To take down a World Champ like Mick, one has really prove it. Kolohe thought he had done so, but the judges didn’t agree. Experience trumped youth as Mick caught the better waves and surfed them more completely. Kolohe took to the air (unsuccessfully). Mick stuck to the face. And with less than five minutes on the clock, Kolohe went for broke on a mid-sized wave with an air reverse and a few turns. When the score wasn’t what he needed, Kolohe showed his frustration with a big ‘ol f*ck you to the judges’ tower.

But to his credit, Kolohe composed himself and had a cordial post-heat interview with Strider Wasilewski. He was a good sport; he thanked his fans and said how awesome the event was. Yada, yada. Bullshit, bullshit. Viewers waited for Kolohe to channel his inner Bobby Martinez, cursing the WSL to damnation, but the moment never came. What a let-down! Emotionally deranged Kolohe is way more fun. Like when he beat up his board at J-Bay.
