There is no way that you’ve forgotten Koa Smith’s all-time barrel at Skeleton Bay. “It’s what Kelly Slater was striving for with the Surf Ranch,” we wrote when the clip hit the internet. “It is the wave everyone dreams of. It is Shangri-La, Paradise, the Fountain of Youth, and the Holy Grail. It is what we all search for, but will likely never find. Koa Smith, however, found it. According to the man flying the drone, he traveled over a mile, got tubed eight times, and surfed for two minutes straight. Oh, and here’s what it looked like from Koa’s point of view. Be careful, though, because this is like Icarus flying too close to the sun type of shit.”
Well, Koa has done it again, and his waxen wings don’t appear to have melted just yet. Koa was watching the forecast closely when he saw a swell of ridiculous proportions aiming for his favorite stretch of sand. “I was deep in Indonesia filming for our series and then this swell popped up on the forecast,” he explained. “We called that trip a wrap and flew 40 hours to this place.”
It was a good decision. The waves that roped off the fabled point were like nothing anyone’s seen there, and Koa found himself in his all-time favorite place for a really, really long time.
