The Inertia

Koa Smith is on the ultimate Indonesian surf adventure. This time, he braved leopards, tigers, monkeys and a three-hour boat ride to find perfect 10-12-foot waves at an iconic left-hand point break.

“Today we’re jumping on a three-hour boat ride (in open ocean) heading to one of the most legendary left-hand point breaks in the world,” says Koa to the camera at the top of the video. He’s joined on that journey by Mananalu Chandler, who nearly falls off of said boat after seeing the waves greeting them at the end of the journey.

Later on, at the tail end of an epic session, Koa became introspective. While looking into his GoPro, he turned to some magical thinking and credited the pumping conditions to his own manifestations. “My intention definitely came through today. I got the feeling of what it feels like to get a really good wave. It’s funny, people kept asking me ‘Are you getting any good ones’ and I’m like ‘no, no no,'” said Koa. “As soon as I started changing that mindset, of ‘Yes, I am getting good ones’ even though I haven’t gotten good ones yet… I started getting good ones.”

Hopefully he uses those supernatural powers for good. It’s a lot of responsibility to be able to control the seas with one’s mind, but if anyone can shoulder that burden, it’s Koa.
