The Inertia

The latest Koa Smith video starts off on with an introspective beat. The Oahu surfer stands on the sand and realizes that maybe it’s time to look outside of the confines of the barrel for surfing satisfaction.

“I realized that my obsession with getting absolutely tubed makes it so I tend to forget how fun doing turns and doing airs is,” says Smith. “Since winter is kind of winding down, I’m kind of realizing that now is the time to focus in on some airs and some maneuvers.”

To be fair, when he does actually go out, he doesn’t exactly shy away from the tube. On the other hand, it’s nice to see him doing some actual turns and punts. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

In other news, Smith also teased an upcoming surfboard line. The project, called Residence Surfboards, is a collaboration with Matt Parker of Album Surf. It turns out that all the boards he’s been riding lately have been prototypes for Residence. The project has even spawned an experimental model with a waved rail line that came about after Koa contemplated the shape of a steak knife. “Will this be a model in Residence Surfboards? I don’t know, maybe,” said Smith. “Is it the future? Is it the worst board ever? All possibilities exist, here.”
