Koa Smith and his brother Travis went off the beaten path to check out a wave in Watukarung, Java, in their most recent YouTube release. After seeing a video of Bruce Irons surfing the spot in 2017, the Smith brothers rode buses, motor scooters and barrels in order to journey in the legend’s footsteps.
After getting the lowdown from Rizal Tandjung, owner of the Desa Limasan resort in Watukarung, the Smiths head out in search of their own adventure. “This place looks like something out of Narnia meets Avatar,” says Koa of the nearby town, and the wave itself is similarly fantastic. Despite the unpredictability of the break, big turns and big airs are on the menu, along with some Gilligan’s Island-style motor scooter maintenance.
