The Inertia

The freesurfers have been unleashed on the world. With the end of the Hawaii winter season, all the pros who were previously crowding the Pipeline lineup are back on the search. YouTuber Koa Smith took the opportunity to travel to Fiji, where he hit up Cloudbreak for a session. Luckily he documented the whole thing, which he posted to his channel in a raw edit.

“A beautifully chaotic dance between taking 12-15-foot sets on the head and scoring the dreamiest Cloudbreak POV barrels,” described Smith in the caption. “The water was so clear you could see the violence underwater as massive waves exploded around us. This is raw, real, and straight from the impact zone — my favorite moments from Fiji.”

It’s a promising start for a surfer who has made a name for himself exploring the world in search of ridiculous waves (you may remember that Smith’s claim to fame was an insane video at Skeleton Bay, where he scored eight barrels in one wave). Though Pipeline is, and always has been, surfing’s main stage, it’s a welcome reprieve to see waves from other parts of the world. Here’s to seeing what the rest of the season brings.
