Waimea Bay is without a doubt one of the most storied places in surfing. The Bay can be seen as a grandfather of big wave surfing, of sorts. The first rock that started an avalanche. Which makes an invite to the Eddie Aikau Invitational the brightest feather in the cap of any big wave surfer, and the opening ceremony was in early December. All the biggest names were there, and since we live in a world full of vlogs, we get to see it.
A few days after Koa walked us through one of the most prestigious opening ceremonies there is, Waimea turned on. It wasn’t quite big enough to run the Eddie, but it was plenty big. Koa Rothman was kind enough to film the whole thing for us, and from the looks of it, if the Eddie runs this year, it’s going to be full of some of the best big wave surfers in the world. And guess who else showed up for a quick cameo? Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa.
