Hawai’i may be the spiritual capital of surfing, but there’s a case to be made that Australia is the modern epicenter of the sport. It’s a massive continent, surrounded by every type of wave imaginable, from the endless barrels of the Superbank to the mutant slabs of Western Australia. Lately, Koa Rothman has embarked on a journey to take in all that the land down under has to offer.
“It looks like we’re going to score some very remote, really, really sick slabs for about two weeks straight. It’s going to be insane,” said Rothman at the beginning of a long, long trip to a remote Australian break. “There’s so much coastline here. I wonder how much of it is undiscovered, because it’s so remote.”
That coastline almost remained undiscovered, as Rothman and company underestimated the availability of gas stations in the outback. However, the journey got back on track and the crew finally scored big time. After the inaugural session of the trip, the gang also managed to squeeze in an impromptu violin performance. Australia really does have everything.
