The weather in Hawaii is pretty much perfect. It’s never actually “cold.” Sure, the top of a couple of volcanoes get a blizzard warning every now and then, but for the most part, the air feels like warm satin. Even when it rains, that rain is pleasant. Even when the wind is howling, that wind isn’t even close to chilling the bones. But when it gets stormy in that little slice of paradise, the surf gets a little roughed up, so Koa Rothman decided that, since there was a Hawaiian hurricane, they’d try and find a few waves that aren’t always breaking.
Koa knows Oahu and its waves very well. He knows which wave works on which swell direction. Knows how the winds will affect different waves around the island. And since Koa and his friends have an affinity for slabs, they figured they’d focus on those. Day one was not a success. After driving and driving and checking and checking and driving and checking some more, the day got away from them. But they were not deterred, so as the sun rose the next day, they started their mission all over again. And as the old saying goes, they came to the realization that it really isn’t about the destination — it’s about the journey.
