The Inertia

The hits just keep on coming from Hawai’i’s winter season. New footage from Koa Rothman documents the latest insanity going down on the North Shore.

“The waves are massive and we’re headed out to some outer reefs, here on Oahu,” says Rothman at the top of the video, as he drives in the pre-dawn darkness. He went on to explain that his return to this particular wave has been a long time coming, as he hadn’t surfed it since he got one of the best rides of his life there a few years earlier. In fact, the expedition marked a return for Rothman in a few ways. “I haven’t surfed a big wave since The Eddie,” he explained “After today I can once again call myself a big-wave surfer.”

Not that he really needed to prove his bona fides to anyone, but the conditions on tap certainly did the trick. Out in the water, he was joined by Nathan Florence for some serious barrels, set to a pumping synth soundtrack. Special mention goes to the clip at 8:15, featuring a tube ride that ends with Rothman just sort of…floating off into the ether.
