It’s been seven weeks since Koa Rothman snapped a ligament in his foot while surfing in Australia. Now, he’s posted a video of his first surf back from the injury, along with information on his recovery process.
The post begins with a grueling visit to a Dr. H. Rey Gubernick, better known as Dr. G, who attaches Rothman’s foot to a device that delivers repeated electric shocks. “The more pain you can take, the less pain you’ll have when you’re done,” says Dr. G in the video. The treatment was the latest in a battery of treatments Rothman underwent, including stem cell treatment.
After a brief stop in the gym, where he describes his recovery process, Koa finally returns to the water. Following a quick session, where he looked in fine form, Rothman was optimistic.”Foot feels great,” he said in the sand. “I was babying it a little bit, but I think it was a good start.”
Koa also had a message about handling the mental toll an injury can have. “It’s tough, with injuries you go through all these waves of emotion. You make some progress…but then you have these little hiccups that get in your head,” said Rothman. “I’m just on a mission to get in shape, be very healthy and positive and not get down.”
