The Inertia

One of the best things about surfing is being surprised. Whether it’s waves better than you expected or a wave you didn’t know existed, it’s always a good idea to take advantage of those situations when they pop up. And Koa Rothman recently did just that.

“Crazy little sandbar popped up,” he said. “There’s no one out in this secret little zone on the North Shore.”

It’s fair to say that the North Shore has been fairly well explored. Most of the regular waves there are world renowned, and given the fact that it’s about seven miles long and pretty wide open, “secret spots” are few and far between. But as the sand moves around from those famous reefs, every now and then it’ll pile up somewhere in such a way that, for a while at least, a wave forms.

Of course, some of those waves aren’t all that easy to surf, but if you’re someone like Koa who has grown up sipping on that Hawaiian juice, it’s worth a shot. “If you can see it, you can surf it,” as the saying goes. It’s not always about making the wave, though, and sometimes a quick barrel vision is just as fun.

“I only made one wave,” Koa said from the beach post-session. “But it was fun. A couple of crazy visions, which I’m stoked on.”

It didn’t last too long, but the early birds got their fill of worms. And there’s no shortage of fantastic waves on the fabled stretch of sand, so Koa pulled the chute on the sandbar and headed over to Rocky Point, which was, as Koa said, “next-level firing.”
