Kimo Leong is a big dude. Definitely the kind of guy you’d like to have in your corner when all hell breaks loose. And that’s especially true if you ever visit the beach at Makaha. While Leong describes himself as a big teddy bear, he’s an undeniable fixture and patriarch of Makaha, and without his blessing, not much gets done. Kimo is also the founder of Kanaka Security Solutions, the security outfit that protects the North Shore during the Triple Crown of Surfing. Not a soul on their team wears a shirt with fewer than three X’s on the tag. That’s just how it goes. Like we said, he’s a good fella to know.
We caught up with Kimo in his home, the fabled Makaha Beach, to hear his thoughts around aloha and pointers for visitors to the Oahu’s North Shore, and his insight made a lot of sense: show respect, study the water, and clean up your trash when you leave. It’s paradise, so we all share in that responsibility to keep it pristine for the keiki and generations to come.
