It’s been a big year for surfing media. Earlier in 2024, Lorcan Finnegan directed The Surfer, a drama starring Nicolas Cage as the eponymous character, battling angry locals in Australia. Meanwhile, on TV, Rescue: HI-Surf is currently powering through its first season, dramatizing the lives of North Shore lifeguards. Now, Kevin Costner is set to get in on the action, with an upcoming surf thriller titled Headhunters.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Headhunters is described as combining the “kinetic energy of surf culture with the suspense of horror.” In it, Costner will star as Lazer, an American ex-pat living in Bali, who recruits a group of surfers to find an undiscovered wave on an uncharted island. When they arrive, it turns out the island is inhabited by an ancient tribe of headhunters. As the official logline reads, “What ensues is an adventure turned survival story of epic and bloody proportions on a tropical island which once seemed to be paradise…but is actually closer to hell.”
Longtime cinematographer Steven Holleran will make his directorial debut on the project. Holleran also originated the idea for the story, which he then collaborated with Costner on for the script. The feature is currently in pre-production in Hawai’i, with a November start date.
