Kelly Slater is a talented human being. Not just as a surfer, either — all that talent is spread out like jam on toast. You probably know that he’s dabbled in music for a long time now — he hangs with the likes of Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter, Ben Harper, and Eddie Vedder, after all. And way back in the mists of time, he, along with Rob Machado and Peter King, formed a band called The Surfers.
You might have a friend who pulls out a guitar every now and then and croons away beside a campfire. It can be nice, but sometimes those friends just butcher a song and make the campfire awkward. Kelly Slater’s not a song butcherer, and recently he pointed the camera at himself to film a song he wrote back in 2003. “Seems fitting now,” he said. “Needed to warm up the vocals, but you get the picture.”
