The Inertia

Apparently, the last 45 event wins and 10 World Titles were not a fluke. In the opening event of the 2011 ASP World Tour, Kelly Slater, who arrived in Australia unsure of his intentions or aspirations for the year ahead, went ahead and won the 2011 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast by defeating Taj Burrow in the final.

“I’d love to get another win at the Quiksilver Pro,” Slater said at the beginning of the event. “Either a great way to go out or to start another campaign! I can’t honestly answer that (my plans for the year) right now. I’ve thought about doing a farewell aloha tour and saying bye to the tour and I’ve thought about retiring after this event for real.”

Slater also said, “My competitive desire died when Andy died,” at the ASP Awards Banquet, so, as usual, the surf world is left wondering about his intentions for 2011. However, with yet another title under his belt, no one wonders who the modern-day king of surfing is. Kelly answered that question years ago.
