Whether he was nursing a four-year-old foot injury or was simply disenchanted by the altered Australian leg, we haven’t seen Kelly Slater surf in a jersey since Pipeline at the and of last year (the official start of the 2020-2021 season). He looked comfortable at Pipeline because he loves Pipeline. And today, he looked more than comfortable at the Surf Ranch because, well, he helped create the Surf Ranch and has probably logged a lot of time there. Mr. Slater looked like he was 40 (he’s 49) in the pool at Lemoore, California, and the World Surf League quickly created a solid cut of his best scoring rides that ensure the 11-time champ will surf into the weekend at the Ranch.
