If you have to winter somewhere, Hawaii is a good place to do it. Which is why Kelly Slater often does it. It’s a bit of a second home to the 11 time world champion, and this winter is no different. He’s been making the rounds there, hanging out with the likes of RFK Jr. and doing various Hawaii-centric things, and one of those things is surfing Haleiwa.
It’s not an easy wave to surf, no matter who you are. The current is notoriously strong and the wave is heavier than it looks, but Kelly has surfed it enough that he’s got it pretty dialed. On January 18th, he paddled out into a lineup with waves in the 4-6 ft range with some occasional bigger sets. He wasn’t the only one out, of course, but it’s tough to not stand out among the crowd when you’re Kelly Slater.
