You may have heard the news about the new wave pool in Abu Dhabi. Aerial footage was recently released that showed the scale of it, and it’s positively enormous. Now, just a few days later, Kelly Slater has surfed the first waves of many to be pumped out.
It makes sense that Slater would be among the first to sample the product — likely the first — since the pool uses Kelly Slater Wave Co technology, the same found at the Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California. “I’ve surfed hundreds of incredible waves across the world and this wave in Abu Dhabi stacks up well against some of the best waves on earth,” Slater said. “It’s hard to believe that this thing exists. We knew that if someone could build something to the best quality, it would be here in this part of the world.”
It looks very similar to the Lemoore wave, only quite a bit bigger and longer. Located on Hudayriyat Island in Abu Dhabi, there doesn’t appear to be a set date for when it will be officially open to the public, but rumor has it that it will operate a little bit differently than the Surf Ranch. The public will be able to surf it, instead of forking out a fortune to surf in a private group. No matter your thoughts on wave pools, it’s hard to deny that the wave at Surf Ab Dhabi looks ridiculously fun.
