In surfing, there are a handful of people who have reached icon status. Some are still competing, like Kelly Slater. Some have long since hung up the jersey. But all are still surfing, jersey or not. And at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast Pro, the Challenger Series event that came just after the Margaret River mid-season cut, the WSL enlisted a handful of them to show that surfing does not end when the jersey is on the hanger.
Kelly Slater, who was surfing in the event, paddled out on a twin-fin. Bede Durbidge, a man who surfs like someone would surf if they created a computer program that created the technically perfect surfer, was there too. Chelsea Hedges, 2005 World Champion, Mark Occhilupo, Dean Morrison, Josh Kerr, and Kate Wilcomes all paddled out, too. And what a pleasure it is to watch them surf. Icons for a reason, right?
