The Inertia

Kelly Slater has done a lot over the course of his surfing career. He’s had a hand in just about every aspect of riding waves, from board design and surf-related companies to literally creating a man-made break. He’s the youngest world champion and the oldest. He played a big role in transforming surfing from a fringe pastime to a professional sport that’s rapidly gaining in popularity — which could be seen as good or bad, depending on your stance — and has had an enormous impact on multiple generations of surfers.

He’s famously unafraid, especially in recent years, to make his opinions on hot-button topics known. He’ll argue with strangers on social media over vaccines and the even the shape of the planet. Through it all, he’s maintained his passion for surfing. His passion for competing might be waning slightly, but not for the act of riding waves. He’s been dedicated to his health for years and isn’t afraid of seeking out different options or opinions. He is the G.O.A.T. of surfing, which is why the Men’s Journal Everyday Warrior podcast had him sit down to talk about… well, a lot.
