Keala Kennelly has been through a lot in her life. She is, without a doubt, a pioneer of surfing — not just women’s surfing, but surfing in general. She’s been outspoken about equality for years and played a huge role in the fight for equal pay in surfing.
She’s a world champion. She’s paid her dues at waves of serious consequence like Teahupo’o, Jaws, and Pipe. Her origin story is an interesting one, to say the least: competing against Andy and Bruce Irons, fighting for her place in the pack, earning her spot on tour, and then deciding to leave — it could all be made into a Hollywood film.
And here, in the World Surf League’s podcast, Kennelly dives deep into all of it. There’s a good chance that KK might be the most interesting person in surfing.
