The Inertia

There are a lot of things one can do in the ocean, and Kai Lenny basically does them all. Big wave surfing, regular old surfing, kiting, foiling, windsurfing… you name it, Kai’s doing it. He’s pretty good at mixing and matching them, too, and one of the best things a person can do is dangling a hook and hoping a fish takes an interest in it. Now, generally people who fish do it from a boat or with a speargun, but Kai, as we’ve come to expect by now, decided he’d do things a little differently.

He took an e-foil out in Fiji with a pretty simple trolling setup. Just a lure and a line — with a quick release for safety’s sake, and buzzing around that island paradise until a fish grabbed on. Hand-lining is an incredibly fun way to fish, and that’s how Kai pulled one in. He had to wait until dark, though, finally pulling a fish in after a full day on the water, but they don’t call it catching for a reason.
