Here’s the thing about beach cleanups: they’re really hard to do on secluded, hard-to-access beaches. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. But just because we can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there, and there are countless beaches around the world that are choking on our garbage. The ones that humans don’t often set foot on are often the ones that are most important to the animals in the area. The coastline of Maui by Jaws is one of those places—when the waves are giant, getting there is damn near impossible, so Kai Lenny and a group of other beach cleaners took advantage of a flat day to head into an area inundated with debris. Using a helicopter and a Jet Ski, they took out an incredible 8,000 pounds of trash.
“We had a huge “hard to reach beach clean up” and successfully removed 35 sacks of trash weighing in at 8,000 pounds off the coastline of Maui by Peahi aka Jaws,” Lenny wrote on Instagram.” Amazing effort by everyone who volunteered and huge thanks @lovetheseaplasticfree @sustainablecoastlineshawaii for making it happen! I’m so grateful!
