@kai_lenny Learning new tricks in big waves don’t come with out consequences. Every fall or caught inside there’s a chance the board will go straight on the rocks. In an attempt to save my board I was dragged over the falls. 🦈 🚁 @Tucker Wooding @hurley @Red Bull @tagheuer ♬ Wraiths on Wings – Howard Shore

If you’ve ever found yourself on Maui’s north shore, staring from the cliff out at Jaws on its day, then you know the feeling that it can give you. That feeling in the pit of your stomach, as if it’s sinking out of your body, is actually a true understanding of just how big of a wave surfers are dealing with when they find themselves in the lineup. And that’s without even paddling out. Now imagine riding one of those beasts. Dealing with all the chop on those faces, dodging sets, or, gulp, taking one on the head? Or, as Kai Lenny did recently, going over the falls in the most nightmarish of scenarios. Well, Kai gave us a glimpse, posting some pretty epic footage of just that.

“Learning new tricks in big waves doesn’t come without consequences,” he wrote. “Every fall or (getting) caught inside, there’s a chance the board will go straight on the rocks. In an attempt to save my board I was dragged over the falls.”

Interestingly enough, Kai posted the below video on Instagram after that with the caption, “The trick I was working on,” which leaves one to assume that a fall during this maneuver is what sent his board into the rocks, and Mr. Lenny over the falls trying to save his fiberglass stick. Wow…
