The Inertia

When winter hits Maui, all eyes turn to Peahi. It’s one of the world’s most famous waves for a reason, and those reasons are why some of the world’s best surfers wait all year for opening day. Which, as you may or may not be aware, was just a few days ago.

Kai Lenny is one of those surfers who, despite the fact that he has plenty of other distractions, always has a part of his brain dialed to Jaws. So you can bet that he wouldn’t miss the first day of the year for anything, and he came ready to play.

“Felt so good to surf Jaws again,” he wrote. “Conditions were perfect with absolutely no wind, a super rare occurrence for Maui. My first wave was a barrel after only a few minutes being in the lineup. This is the foundation to build upon for the rest of the winter.”
