The Inertia

Kai Lenny is known mostly for surfing either a strange surfboard or a huge wave. Those foiling clips or aerial antics at Nazaré are eye-catching, to say the least, so it’s not all that surprising that it might be easy to forget that Kai Lenny is also just a super good surfer on a regular shortboard in waves that aren’t the size of a building. Take, for example, the quick session at Rocky Point in the video above. But of course, Kai Lenny’s bread and butter are big waves. That’s why he loves Sunset: it’s kind of the OG big wave.

Kai, as you know, is a Maui fella, but the waves on Oahu’s North Shore are world-famous for a reason. Maui’s great, sure, but the Seven Mile Miracle really can’t be beat. That’s why Lenny hopped a flight over for a bit of board testing. The whole thing is yet another reminder that Kai Lenny isn’t just a big wave guy or a foilboard guy. He’s not a one-trick pony—he’s a million-trick pony.
