The Inertia

Kai Lenny is one of the best big wave surfers in the world. He got to that place by surfing big waves as much as humanly possible; traveling the planet in search of oversized surf and making sure he’s in the right place at the right time. And when giant swells roll through, they’re not usually a one-day event. Such was the case with the swell that flipped the green light on for the Eddie.

Kai, as you likely know by now, finished in fifth place at that coveted event on Oahu’s North Shore. But the swell didn’t just vanish when the contest finished. By the next day, Kai was back home on Maui, and he wasn’t going to let an opportunity to surf maxing Jaws pass him by, despite the fact that he was likely a little worn out from the previous day. So he went to Jaws, where the Eddie swell was creating waves that, to most, would be cause to run screaming for the hills. Kai, though? Kai charged.

“The day after the Eddie Aikau event, Kai Lenny came straight to Jaws after sunrise with his team and showed everyone some next level XXL surfing on giant waves,” wrote Marcus Rodrigues, who filmed this short video. “First, Kai paddled in on some very serious heavy waves from the north peak, riding them all the way through. Then he grabbed the rope with Slater Trout, who he teamed up with for this tow in session. Kai took his surfing to the next level!”
