The Inertia

Kai Lenny doesn’t surf like anyone else. Sure, he rides waves on a little piece of foam wrapped in a layer of hard stuff, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. He surfs waves that are far bigger than the ones that most people surf. He surfs far better on a vast array of different surf craft. He’s a SUP surfing world champion, champion big wave surfer, and a lot more. As Red Bull put it, “kiteboarding, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, foiling, big wave surfing, or anything else in the water – Kai does it all, and at an expert level.”

It’s pretty wild, if you take a second to really think about it. Most people dedicate themselves to one venture in particular. If they work hard enough, they become good at it. But for one person to be considered the best in the world at so many different ones? Unheard of.

Part of the reason that he’s been so successful is that he’s constantly curious. He’s constantly looking for new ways to have more fun. And for Kai, having more fun means getting the absolute most out of whatever venture he chooses to put his time into. Take foiling, for example. It’s gaining in popularity, sure, but Kai is already out there attempting double backflips while most of us are struggling to get the board out of the water. No, Kai is far ahead, focusing on getting the foil and the board as high into the air as possible.
