The Inertia

Kai Lenny looks at surfing a little differently than most. Sure, he rides waves just like the rest of us, but he’s got a sharper focus on what could be instead of what’s been done. While most of us take tips from what other surfers do, Kai Lenny is trying new things, pushing to higher levels, and generally setting the benchmark in a whole lot of different arenas. And to do all that, one must experiment.

When it comes to experimentation in surfing, wave pools are extraordinarily helpful. In nature, as you know, waves are sporadic, and ever-changing. Practicing the same thing over and over and over again is pretty dang tough under normal conditions, but in a wave pool? Push a button, receive a wave, push it again and receive another. Practice over and over and over again until the body remembers what it needs to do.

Kai Lenny and Jamie O’Brien headed to the Surf Ranch with pro skater Zion Wright, and if nothing else, it’s a glimpse into the direction that surfing could likely take.
