If a random person were to show up at your local spot wearing a suit modeled after a flying squirrel and riding a hydrofoil, you would probably laugh at them. You, as an average surfer, would look down on them. You, as an average surfer, would look at this foiling bat suiter and think, “KOOK.”
But wait. What if that person was none other than Kai Lenny? The same Kai Lenny who rules Jaws with a smiling fist. The same Kai Lenny who, by all accounts, is one of the best living watermen (a true one, not the kind of waterman who rides a SUP badly and talks about the benefits of freediving while never surfing anything larger than overhead). Kai Lenny, who has basically mastered all disciplines of ocean playing. Kai Lenny, who doesn’t much care what anyone thinks, because Kai Lenny is only interested in doing things that are enjoyable.
“Experimenting and always thinking of what could be next,” he wrote on Instagram. “The #BatSuit has potential, with some modifications the possibility of cruising on a reach and upwind could be insane. This was the first prototype test a couple months ago, it had moments of brilliance especially when I tried it again in windier conditions. It’s so fun doing this stuff!”
