Jordy Smith is having a banner year. Going into the 2025 season, it had been eight years since he’d secured a win. Then, he won the Surf City El Salvador Pro in April – steamrolling none other than Italo Ferriera in the quarterfinals, on his way to an all South African final against Matthew McGillivray. Now, with a victory in Western Australia, he’s done it again.
The final was a matchup against Griffin Colapinto. In it, Smith handily defeated the San Clemente native with an explosive 8.5-point opener that Griff was unable to answer. The rest of the heat was fairly quiet, with both competitors only scoring an additional sub-5-point ride each. However, if one single wave was ever going to decide a Championship Tour event, this is a worthy one.
Riding the back of that wave also took Jordy to unprecedented heights in the rankings. Off the Western Australia win, he’s now sitting at the top of the pack in the yellow jersey, nearly five-thousand points above next-in-line Italo Ferreira.
