The Inertia

Nothing beats a good surf edit. Raw footage and rough cuts for social media are nice and all, but they lack a certain panache. Thankfully, Jordy Smith seems to agree, as his first foray into the realm of YouTube is a beautifully shot short film, entitled Plus 27.

Jordy has been a fixture in the world of professional surfing for decades. He’s a Championship Tour mainstay, two-time world title runner up and two-time Olympian. However, throughout all that, he’s never delved into the world of YouTube – something he decided to rectify recently.

“I know I’m late to the punch, but better late than never,” explained Jordy in an announcement on Instagram. “I’m just going to be posting my surfs and things that I get up to on a regular basis.”

Plus 27 is the first entry into Smith’s YouTube presence, and it has a little bit of everything, from sweeping vistas, to cheeky faux-vintage establishing shots, to behind the scenes snippets of Jordy and company traveling from location to location. Throughout it all is an attention to craft that makes the endeavor a pleasure to watch.

Of course, the surfing is pretty damn great, too.

Along with Jordy, the film features Eli Beukes, Mikey February, Dale Staples, Luke Thompson, James Ribbink, Chad Du Toit, Josh Redman, Dan Redman and Brandon Jackson.
