For most people, fins are a necessary bit of hardware. Sure, you could surf without them, but you probably wouldn’t be very good without a hell of a lot of practice. So much practice, in fact, that the number of people who surf without fins on a regular basis is extraordinarily small. A few names come to mind when thinking of friction-free surfers — Derek Hynd, of course, but also Brad Domke and Jordan Rodin. The latter is who you see in the video above.
In Head in the Clouds, Rodin treks around Western Australia. He surfed a handful of different boards, but one in particular was shaped by Hynd himself.
“It’s been a interesting journey for Jordan Rodin,” wrote Billy Cervi, who made the film. “Watching him grow and progress in his surfing and board shaping skills. Experimenting with what works and what doesn’t. Jordan’s a working class man, so he doesn’t get to surf for a living but he makes do with what he’s got quite well I think.”
“Quite well” might be the understatement of the year.
