The Inertia

If you’re Jojo Roper, orange is the new black when it comes to wetsuits, and Maverick’s, one of the biggest and most dangerous waves in the world, is nothing more than a playground. Jojo’s a pretty humble and down-to-earth guy, but when it comes to wetsuits and surfboards, the man likes to keep things colorful. Whether or not that’s just a smart strategy to stand out in the lineup and make his filmer’s job a little easier, or there’s a class clown living somewhere within Jojo, it sure adds an element of fun into the serious nature of Jojo’s big-wave surfing.

There was a lot that went on this 2021-2022 winter season down at Maverick’s, with a lot of solid days of surf, and a few days with standout conditions thanks to what felt like an entire month of offshore winds in January. Jojo put in the time out there this season, catching some true monster waves, and attempting a few barrels on the infamous Maverick’s Left. The Mavericks Surf Awards are coming up in a couple weeks (Saturday, May 7). Could this be the year Jojo takes home the top honors?
