The Inertia

John Philbin has been in a lot of great movies. Most notably (in the surf community, at least) North Shore, in which he played Turtle, the guy that nobody listened to. “When the wave breaks here,” Turtle said, “don’t be there.”

Philbin ran into a bit of trouble with the law a few days ago when he was arrested for allegedly waving a gun around after he and his girlfriend got into an argument–a very uncharacteristic move for the well-liked and often-smiling guy. The North Shore star also had roles in Point Break (DON’T TELL ME TO RELAX, BODIE! HE’S A FUCKIN’ FEDERAL AGENT!), Children of the Corn (“My passage. It is my birthday.”), Tombstone (“wearin’ that badge don’t make you right… who in the hell do you think you are?”) and Return of the Living Dead (“I like death with sex. Casey, do you like sex with death?”), making him something of a cult classic staple. As roles began to get harder and harder to find, Philbin turned to teaching surf lessons, gathering up a pretty impressive clientele list, including Helen Hunt, Kate Bosworth, and Viggo Mortensen, among others.

According to Fox News and TMZ, two of the classiest reporting services out there, after Philbin and his girlfriend got into an argument, the neighbors called the police. When they arrived on the scene, officers heard that Philbin was waving a gun around before a neighbor managed to convince him to hand over the weapon. He then took a walk, and was arrested when he returned. Philbin is being held on $25,000 bail.
