JJF, midway through his second perfect 10.

John John Florence, as far as I’m concerned, is the best surfer in the world. I’ve said it before, and I’m sticking to my guns. He’s better than Slater. He’s better than Gabriel. Bold claims, I know. Here’s the thing, though: he’s not even close to the best contest surfer in the world, which is the important thing if you’re a professional surfer. That’d be like a plumber being absolutely amazing at fixing his toilet at home, but as soon as he goes to someone else’s toilet, he fumbles the plunger and falls in the toilet.
But John John seems as though he might be on the road to figuring the whole contest thing out. In Portugal, he clocked not just one but two perfect scores in waves that are definitely not conducive to perfect scores. He finds openings on waves that just don’t have any. Judging by the last few contests, whatever he’s found is a good thing. Hopefully he finds more of it, because if a world title is an indicator of the best surfer in the world, then John John needs one.
